Zodiac Constellation Wood Tag Ornaments
Zodiac Constellation Wood Tag Ornaments
In western astrology, the zodiac is an area of the sky that spans about 8 degrees north and south of the celestial equator. The twelve signs correspond (approximately) to twelve constellations, each of which takes up about 30 degrees of celestial longitude.
The zodiac was used in ancient Rome and was based on concepts from Babylonian astronomy. The stars incorporated in the zodiac were compiled into a catalogue around 1000 BC, and the 12 zodiac signs — analogous to 12 months of 30 days — were introduced around 500 BC. The mathematician and astronomer Ptolemy “the Alexandrian” wrote about the zodiac in the 2nd century AD. The zodiac was used as a method for defining celestial positions in western astronomy until the Renaissance (15th and 16th centuries, AD).
