Tea Towel - Bioluminescent Jellyfish
Tea Towel - Bioluminescent Jellyfish
Aequorea victoria, more commonly known as the crystal jelly, is a type of bioluminescent jellyfish. A. victoria, which resides off the west coast of North America, appears to glow thanks to two proteins: aequorin and green fluorescent protein. The green fluorescent protein was first isolated in A. victoria, and the discovery was awarded a Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
The towel features sketches of some of the A. victoria and the chemical structure for coelenterazine, which is a type of luciferin that is found in aquatic organisms. Coelenterazine, when incorporated into the aequorin protein, releases light, giving the jellyfish its bioluminescent abilities.
Each towel is printed on cotton linen and affixed with ribbon for hanging. All towels are machine washed to test their durability and to help wear them in a bit for you.
