The James Webb Space Telescope, more commonly known as JWST or simply Webb, is NASA’s next flagship astrophysics mission with a current launch date of October 31, 2021. The telescope will observe long-wavelength visible light (orange and red) through the mid-infrared regime. JWST’s primary mirror is 6.5 meters across (a bit more than 21 feet across) and is made up of 18 hexagonal mirror segments made of gold-plated beryllium. It is equipped with a sunshield to keep its instruments cool; the sunshield is about the size of a tennis court! To fit inside the rocket that will launch it into space, JWST has to be folded up and will self-deploy once it is ejected from the rocket.
