Lakes of Titan - acrylic painting
Lakes of Titan - acrylic painting
Titan, Saturn’s largest moon, has plentiful lakes on its surface. However, unlike the bodies of water on our own planet, the maria (seas) and lacūs (lakes) on Titan are made of liquid ethane and methane, detected by the Cassini-Huygens space probe.
This acrylic painting is inspired by false-color Cassini mosaic images made from synthetic aperture radar detections over Titan’s north polar region. The blue indicates low radar reflective areas corresponding to the hydrocarbon lakes and tributaries. Featured are portions of Punga Mare (top), Kraken Mare (lower left), and Ligeia Mare (right) with smaller lakes dotting the regions around them.
Medium: Acrylic on stretched canvas
